It is important to understand how MintToReport handles Mint.com tags. When you export from Mint, Mint does export all of your attached TAGS. But unfortunately, they do not include any delimiters between each tag but instead, separates each tag with a single space.
Let’s say you have a transaction from Chevron where you got gas and tagged that transaction on Mint with three tags: Auto Fuel, Auto Expense, and Business’. When you export your transactions the Chevron transaction will look something like this:
"Date","Description","Original Description","Amount","Transaction Type","Category","Account Name","Labels","Notes"
"1/19/2016","Chevron","CHEVRON ...","10.31","debit","Groceries","BofA Checking","Auto Fuel Auto Expense Business",""
You’ll notice that your three tags now actually looks like 5 tags and that is exactly how MintToReport will see it. MintToReport has no idea that ‘Auto Fuel’ and ‘Auto Expense’ are just two tags. It thinks it sees four tags. It is not that big of a deal, but it needs to be pointed out. Version 2.0 makes creating tag reports a breeze, but it will look confusing if you have tags that contain more than one word.
You have two options to make sure MintToReport creates a Tag Report correctly:
- RECOMMEND METHOD: Edit your Mint Tags on Mint.com making them just 1-word tags. IE: Auto_Fuel, Auto_Expenses
- If you want to keep your 2-word tags just make sure when you are filtering in MintToReport, you filter by every word the tag contains.
